Zero Trust Security &

Privileged Access Management:

Modern Access Control for Small, Medium & Large-Sized Businesses

Traditional network security assumes that users inside your network can be trusted. Unfortunately, modern cyberattacks exploit that assumption every day. Stolen credentials, phishing attacks, and excessive administrative access are now some of the most common causes of data breaches - especially for small and medium-sized businesses.

At Conducive IT, we help businesses in Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake Valley, and Utah Valley reduce cyber risk through Zero Trust security, Privileged Access Management (PAM), and Just-In-Time (JIT) access controls - practical, scalable solutions designed for real-world business environments.

What Is Zero Trust Security?

Zero Trust is a security model built on a simple principle:
Never trust by default. Always verify.

1

User Identity - Zero Trust verifies who is requesting access every time. This includes strong authentication methods such as multi-factor authentication (MFA) and identity verification checks.

2

Device Health - Zero Trust evaluates the security posture of the device being used to access your systems. This includes checking whether the device is Up to date with security patches, Protected by endpoint security software, and Free of known threats or suspicious behavior.

3

Access Context - Zero Trust looks at how and where access is being requested. Contextual factors may include Location of the user, Time of day, Network being used (office, home, public Wi-Fi), and Unusual or risky login behavior.

4

Permission Level - Zero Trust enforces least-privilege access, meaning users only receive access to the systems and data they need - and nothing more. Administrative or elevated privileges are tightly controlled and often granted only temporarily through Just-In-Time (JIT) access.

Why Zero Trust Matters ...

With Zero Trust, every access request is evaluated before being granted, not just once at login.

This dramatically reduces the impact of:

Stolen or reused credentials

Stolen credentials are one of the leading causes of data breaches. Phishing emails, weak passwords, and password reuse across systems make it easy for attackers to gain access using legitimate logins.

Compromised or infected devices

A user’s device can become infected with malware without their knowledge - through malicious downloads, compromised websites, or email attachments. Traditional security models often trust the device once it’s connected to the network.

Insider threats (intentional or accidental)

Not all security incidents come from external attackers. Insider threats can be intentional - such as disgruntled employees - or accidental, such as users clicking malicious links or accessing systems they shouldn’t.

Lateral movement within your network

Once attackers gain access to one system, their goal is often to move laterally - spreading to other systems, servers, and data. Traditional networks make this easy by trusting internal traffic.  Zero Trust restricts lateral movement by continuously verifying access between systems.

Why Traditional Security Models Are Failing SMBs

Most cyberattacks today don’t start with advanced hacking techniques. They start with:

*

Phishing Emails - Phishing emails trick employees into clicking malicious links or entering credentials by impersonating trusted contacts. Traditional security often can’t stop every phishing attempt. Zero Trust assumes phishing will succeed and limits damage by verifying identity, device health, and access context before granting system access.

*

Weak or Reused Credentials - Weak or reused passwords make it easy for attackers to access multiple systems with a single credential. Zero Trust limits the impact of poor password hygiene by enforcing least-privilege access and requiring ongoing verification, preventing one compromised password from exposing the entire environment.

*

Stolen Passwords - Stolen passwords allow attackers to log in as legitimate users, often bypassing basic security controls. Zero Trust reduces this risk by requiring additional verification and continuously validating access. Even if credentials are compromised, attackers are prevented from freely accessing systems or sensitive data.

*

Excessive Admin Rights - Permanent admin access gives attackers immediate control if an account is compromised. Zero Trust enforces least-privilege and Just-In-Time access, granting elevated permissions only when needed and only temporarily, dramatically reducing the risk and impact of compromised accounts.
